The triple gymnasium sports hall for a suburban town north of Hamburg, Germany is developed through a public-private partnership. In order to minimize costs and control the budget of the development from very early on in the design process, the brief for the building was extremely detailed. Every single material and fixture that had to be used in the construction process was lined out. We treated the assignment much like a big box of Lego elements that had to be combined in order to achieve the highest architectural quality possible, while closely adhering to the material palette and construction methods that were outlined. Our design embraces the constraint as a chance for testing a different working method. In doing so we scrutinized the process for even further improvement then initially called for.
