Our aim for this project was to create a tangible experience of the hidden ancient Roman Roads within the lower Rhineland region of Germany. The roads once were an important physical infrastructure vital to the maintenance and development of the Roman Empire. Nowadays these once important traffic arteries are blurred out by more than 2000 years of human development and modern infrastructure. However, some of the remainders are still recognizable and some contemporary streets align exactly with the Roman development from two millennials ago. Our interventions aim to re-qualify these ancient connections through a series of landmarks and follies that are unified through a red color scheme, which also extends into the selection of particular plants throughout the landscape as well as a common signage system.
