Our proposal for the new train station functions as an important link in-between the northern and southern parts of Gerresheim, a city quarter of Düsseldorf. The project realizes the larger vision of the masterplan idea in detail. The station manifests itself as a glazed volume spanning over the track system. A light, friendly, and safe space enables the crossing of the railway tracks and enables a simpler connection between the two parts of the city quarter. The two underpass areas of the train-station area are not designed like a tunnel or underground corridor, but rather a series of bridges creating open subterranean landscapes. For the more urban passage in the east, the spaces between the bridges are glazed. The result is a space filled with natural light throughout the day. The walls of this space feature a printed installation by the artist Stefan Sous which are illuminated at night, thus creating a very bright and therefore secure crossing. The passage in the west is also projected as a series of bridges where a spacious natural landscape stretches underneath employing plants that flourish in diffuse light conditions.
