The buildings of the Frohnauer Hammer Technical Museum are important witnesses to the early industrial development of the Ore Mountains. Their significance lies not only in the individual structures, but in their collective presence and in the history and uses they embody. Our design concept recognizes the existing buildings as a thematically and spatially distinctive ensemble.

The new visitor center extends and complements this family of historic buildings. It starts with the familiar archetype of the gabled house, prevalent throughout the region, and subtly destabilizes it. The conventional relationship between roof, ridge, and gable is shifted and folded into an unfamiliar geometry. From some viewpoints the building appears almost archetypal; from others, the transformation becomes clearly visible. Its contemporary identity therefore emerges not through contrast with its surroundings, but through the manipulation of a familiar regional type. In this way, the design enters into a contemporary dialogue with the architectural typology of the region.

The urban placement positions the new building at the intersection between the existing structures. The visitor center gives spatial definition to the space they share and creates a new point of arrival for the museum complex. Together, the buildings define a public outdoor space at the center of the ensemble that cars and pedestrians share.

While the visitor center includes small exhibition and conference spaces on its upper level, it is conceived primarily as an entrance and orientation building for the museum. Its contemporary character establishes a recognizable address without competing with the historic structures around it. The intervention strengthens the ensemble as a whole and supports the Frohnauer Hammer in its role as a public museum and as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region.
